Below is my writeup on the ipath shoes that I’ve had for about a month now, the Locust model.
Breaking these shoes in fully took a little bit longer than I was expecting. You probably don’t want to skate using them until you’ve broken them in, they’re a little stiff out from the box. You don’t have to put in too much work to break them in. Wearing them around the house for a couple of days should accomplish the same goal nicely. In order to avoid chafing from the hi-tops on the locust, make sure to wear full length socks as well. Now with that out of the way, the Locust is a superb fit. I am aware a number of people have expressed doubt about how good they are for skating on account of their width, but in reality they look a lot wider than they feel, and they’re excellent for skating. In case you are wondering why they look so wide, that questions is answered once you set your foot inside the shoe. The padding, and consequently the comfort on this shoe is off of the chain. Skate shoes which are sized true can be rough to locate, so if you have sizing issues these shoes are undoubtedly worth your consideration because of their precision in sizing. If you’re budget-minded like me and you are accustomed to cheap skateboarding shoes you’ll find that these are a big step up.
This shoe is unquestionably made for skaters. The grip is better than any other shoe I’ve owned! My last pair of shoes were Vans, and the Locust blows them out of the water as far as grip is concerned. If you’re the type of skater who likes to have their feet glued to the board, these shoes have the kind of grip you’ve been looking for. A velcro strap will make sure that your feet remain in the shoe just as well as the shoe stays on the board.
Taking into consideration the hell I put my shoes through, they’ve held up really nicely over the last month. I’ve noticed that the toe stitching is starting to run a little bit, but considering I spend more time on my board in a week than most people do at their jobs, I can’t say I’m shocked. These are the most durable canvas shoes I’ve even heard of, let alone seen for myself. That said, leather usually lasts longer and deals better with wear.
The Locusts feature what’s become a standard feature of skate shoes, the stash pocket, and are produced from organically grown hemp and cotton in support of the green movement. These shoes also possess a leather upper with rounded toe, a special customizable ankle strap for additional comfort and fit (a feature I totally love) toe ventilation, foam padded lining, removable CHT insole created from coconut skin which Ipath claims will help your feet breathe alot. Lastly, the shoes feature an impact-reducing gel system in the heel to soak up the shock from hard landings.
